223 subsonic with clays powder12/7/2023 ![]() Neither the writer, The Firing Line, nor the staff of TFL assume any liability for any damage or injury resulting from use of this information. I'm going to try 50gr soft point at Hornet velocities next for pelts on fox and bobcat.ĬAUTION: The following post includes loading data beyond or not covered by currently published maximums for this cartridge. I consider it to have made my bolt gun very versatile and loading reduced 223 is easier and cheaper than loading for a 22 Hornet or Fireball. Accuracy was as good as anything else the rifle has produced, it's quiet as a 22 Hornet, won't cycle an AR action but awesome for a bolt gun. I stayed in the ~10gr range for an estimated velocity of ~2700 and this was too much, it did NOT save fox pelts. Seafire at 24hourcampfire chronoed 40gr V-Max at 3375 with Blue Dot. It's great, accuracy is good and you can load from 22 Hornet velocities to 221 Fireball velocities to higher (low 223 velocities if I remember correctly without looking). I have used Blue Dot to load 40gr V-Max in a bolt gun for predators. If all of that has been considered, then I suppose it -IS- time to try making some of it up. So now you're either making quite a sight adjustment or you're going to set up a firearm to run this pistol powder-powered ammo exclusively. but be warned, your point of aim is likely to be radically different than with ammo built to 'normal' spec. If these are not dealbreakers, then you're still in business. Your ability to run a gas-op semi-auto is gone also. 223 with pistol powders, your velocity is GONE. If you run a different powder, you can lop some of that charge weight off, too. That's cheaper than bullets unless you're running lead slugs that you cast yourself or you have some slick swaging setup & your squeezing out home-brew jacketed bullets. That's 280 loaded rounds in a pound of powder. Winchester AUTOCOMP is a ball powder designed for competition race. If I just throw out a "known" acceptable ballpark charge weight for. Even with powder perhaps at an all-time high, it still pales in comparison to what I'm spending on bullets. To the subject, I'd keep in mind what you actually gain and what you give up to get that savings. but a whole generation of handloaders have made Unique their "GO TO" pistol powder for decades. Unique may be known to some as a shotgun powder. Unique can do anything that's ever had the ability to be flung as a result of burning smokeless powder and it's a flake powder. or maybe you're splitting spherical powder balls in to flat flakes! Bullseye may be the original pistol powder of all of them. ![]() Hornady A-Max's.Jim, you're splitting hairs. Winchester Powerpoints I could use for this, as well as some 69gr. offering that EBR must be using is the soft point "Varminter", which doesn't even utilize a boat tail and has a very low B.C. but then I looked and seen that the Gameking is offered in 65gr., not 63. so I assumed they were using the "Gameking" rounds, which are match-grade hunting versions of the Matchking. soft point rounds, and EBR calls them "match". I see the EBR rounds are loaded with Sierra's 63gr. I've never tried to wrap my brain around this subject, I've always decided that if I needed a truly silent weapon, I'd stick with something in. Or what about using a very slow burning powder, such as RL-19, RL-22, or even slower? This would fill the case more with powder, but keep velocity low. I did some experimenting and found some other successful 223 loads, as follows: Bullet: 55 gr Sierra SPBT Primer: Winchester SR Powder: 4 gr Clays Bullet: 68. pills to help with the problem of free space in the case? I was thinking of perhaps using the 80 or 90gr. He's shooting a 16" RRA with a 1/7" twist. I know this topic has been kicked around many many times, and I have tried the search function before posting, but can't find the data I am looking for.Ī friend of mine just got a suppressor, and he wants me to load him some subsonic ammo, for s's and g's basically.
